For almost 20 years, terrain has been my favorite part of miniature wargaming.

Back when Dave and I first got into the hobby, we spent hours carving cliffs out of styrofoam, cutting hills with hot wire cutters, and trying to build tables that looked like the battlefields we imagined. But there was always a problem… the quality of the terrain depended entirely on your skill.

Some hobbyists can sculpt incredible tables from foam and MDF. But for most of us, between assembling armies, painting models, and actually playing games, building beautiful terrain from scratch just isn’t practical.

Over the years we’ve seen terrain evolve — from scratch-built foam boards, to plastic kits, to MDF terrain, and now to 3D printed terrain systems. Each step made it easier to build better tables, but each also came with its own challenges.

That’s why I’ve spent the last few years trying to solve a problem that has frustrated me for two decades:

How do you make terrain that looks amazing, plays well with modern wargames, prints easily, paints quickly, and stores without breaking?

In this video I talk about that journey — from the early days of terrain building all the way to the design philosophy behind our newest terrain system.
